IntheendoftheNineteenthCentury,thetoughcowboyBlaiseStarrettarrivesinthesnowingvillageofBitterswithhisforemanDanwiththeintentionofkillingthefarmerHalCraneusingthepretextofthebarbedwireheisrunningaroundhisfarm.However,BlaisereallywantshiswifeHelenwithwhomhehadaloveaffair.Duringtheshowdownbetweenthecowboysandranchersinthesaloon,theviolentgangofoutlawsledbyCaptainJackBruhnappearsoutoftheblueinterruptingtheirquarrel.JackBruhn,whoisanotoriouscaptainofthearmyresponsibleforthemassacreofavillageofMormons,disarmsthemenandexplainsthattheyhaverobbedthepaymentofthearmyandacavalryischasingthem.Heiswoundedandwantstospendthenightinthevillageandhegiveshiswordtothelocalsthathisgunnerswillnottouchthewomen.Furtherheordersthebarmantohidetheboozefromhismen.WhenthelocalveterinaryremovesthebulletfromthechestofJackBruhn,herealizesthathemighthaveaninternalbleedingandnotsurvive.Blaisedecidestolurethecriminalsandleadtheminajourneywithnoreturn.
